(GO NADS! ...A DOCUMENTARY), SINCE 2019

(CREATIVE DIRECTION) (ART DIRECTION) (MOTION)
GO NADS! is an ongoing experimental documentary following RISD’s very unconventional hockey team: the NADS.

(Whose team cheer is, quite conveniently, “Go Nads!”)

Dating back to 1961, the NADS are the oldest active athletic organization on campus. These days, the team’s revolving roster consists of a ragtag assortment of faculty and staff, ageing alumni, local beer-league players, friends of friends, and the occasional actual student. They have little in common beyond a love of a crude game and a stubborn commitment to keeping their beloved (and officially outlawed) mascot, Scrotie, alive.

GO NADS! follows the team through a particularly awkward period of growing pains. As RISD, its students, and the design world at large marched into a new decade, the NADS found themselves increasingly tangled in bureaucratic red tape. Things that had once been politely ignored were suddenly becoming problems. Scrotie, unfortunately, was one of them.

Part scrapbook, part fever dream, GO NADS! is now entering its seventh (7th!) year of production. At some point, the documentary became something of a NADS operation itself: held together by blind optimism and a shared reluctance to let the whole thing die. It also became an excuse to see how far we could stretch the definition of a documentary. Archival footage, animation, motion graphics, hand-drawn bits, 3D renders, and all sorts of miscellaneous nonsense have made their way into the film. More to come, presumably.
